Between Two Shores

An evening of live music among the rock sculptures, as the sun sets over the Ottawa River.

Greek Rebetiko and Balinese Gamelan at Remic Rapids

 

Set among rock sculptures at Remic Rapids on the shore of the Ottawa River, this evening brings together two unique and rich musical traditions.

The first performance features Dimitri and Kosta Georgaras performing rebetiko, Greece’s distinctive urban folk music, on bouzouki and guitar. Emerging in the early twentieth century from a blending of neighbouring musical traditions, rebetiko is shaped by modal melodies, expressive ornamentation, and the lively interplay of voice and accompanying instruments.

The second performance features Ottawa’s Balinese Gamelan ensemble, Semara Winangun. The group was founded in 2002 with the idea of recreating traditional Balinese court music. Now, more than two decades later, the group's repertoire includes not only traditional music, but contemporary Balinese music, original arrangements and original compositions. The group has performed at many Asian-themed events, and has worked with choirs, jazz musicians, African musicians and dancers, and has also scored a "live soundtrack" for a silent movie at a local film festival. The group maintains its repertoire with weekly practices, and through intensive workshops with visiting Balinese musicians. For more information, please contact ottawagamelan.org.
